DELSILIFE

An educational strategy to fight poverty

Can the rural poor improve their own social and economic conditions by identifying the skills they have to learn in order to solve their problems? And how can this be accomplished? The project DELSILIFE (an acronym referring to the "Development of a Coordinated Educational Intervention System for Improving the Quality of Life of the Rural Poor through Self-reliance") was started to answer these questions. The aim of this project was to develop an educational intervention system in order to improve the living conditions of the deprived rural population in Asia. DELSILIFE was initiated and carried out by the Regional Center for Educational Innovation and Technology (INNOTECH), Manila, which is a specialized organ of the South-East Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO). The system which was developed by INNOTECH was tested in four South-East Asian countries: Indonesia, Malasya, The Philippines and Thailand.

The contribution of CESO tho the project

The Centre for the Study of Education in Developing Countries (CESO) is operating under the aegis of the Nuffic (The Netherlands Organization for International Co-operation in Higher Education). Its general aim is to contribute both scientifically and practically to the improvement of education, in developing countries and to development-cooperation in those areas. At the request of the Netherlands' Ministry and the INNOTECH the Centre acted as consultant in the project DELSILIFE. This consultancy, which the CESO supplied for ten years, consisted in examining the project's value and relevance at village level, cooperating in carrying out the experimental stage, and joining in the development of the model and the training materials.

A unique collection

Thanks to the active participation of CESO in the project, the Centre owns in its specialized library a very extensive collection of documents regarding the DELSILIFE project. This collection is now available on microfiche. It contains all kinds of documents, like research proposals, reports on regional seminars, consultative meetings, technical assistance visits, country reports, packages of training materials etc. In other words, it is a unique collection, which covers all phases and aspects of the project DELSILIFE.
