The Siebold Herbarium is the earliest herbarium collection of this extent from Japan. P.F. von Siebold (1796-1866) brought together c. 12,000 specimens and also included many items from Japanese students and collaborators. Publication on the Japanese flora at that time was impossible without consulting the Japanese collections in Leiden, consequently this collection contains many type specimens. These Japanese collections are still subject of ongoing research. from a source of new species, it now has become important in the study of the history of early Japanese botany.
