Medici Oriental Press, Rome 1584-1614

Order Background

Typographia Medicea

In 1590 an unidentified Arabic version of the Gospels was printed in Rome in two different editions. They were the first products of the Medici Oriental Press, which operated under the direction of Giovan Battista Raimondi (c. 1584-1614), the orientalist and lecturer in mathematics at the Sapienza. Six other Arabic text were printed by this press over the next four years. Out of the seven texts, two were Christian Arabic, the remaining five being scientific works written by Muslim scholars several centuries earlier. With one exception these products of the Medici Press were all first editions. Due chiefly to factors beyond Raimondi’s control – including the loss of his principal patron – his press operated for only a short period.
