Order Background

Treasures and Artefacts of a Swiss Monastic Library

This extraordinary collection comprises some four hundred medieval and early modern manuscripts from the former Benedictine Abbey of Rheinau in the Swiss canton of Zurich. It contains many unpublished texts and pictures on the subjects of liturgy, Gregorian chant, theology, patristics, history, the history of piety, church history, music history, art history, and canon law. The manuscripts are of varying provenance and are not always traceable. Some are from Farfa, Kempten, Reichenau, St. Gallen and Schaffhausen, while only a minority were actually produced at Rheinau. The oldest manuscripts date from the late eighth century, the most recent ones from the early nineteenth. The collection includes, among others, official documents, monastic rules, psalters, bibles, sermons, commentaries, prayer books, missals, breviaries, books of martyrs, and historiographies.
