This herbarium was arranged to illustrate Morison's planned work Plantarum Historiae Universalis Oxoniensis. Only Pars secunda, printed in 1680 was published. The specimens which were obtained from numerous contributors, come from many parts of the world, including Europe, Syria, India, South Africa, North America and the West Indies. Linnaeus examined many of the herbarium's specimens during his stay in Oxford in 1736.
