Ruiz and Pavon's expedition to Chile and Peru lasted for eleven years. All of the original
members remained with the expedition for the entire period, except for the illustrator, who died in
1787. The expedition left Spain in 1777, arrived at Callao (in Peru) in April 1778 and finally
returned to Spain in 1788. The botanists who accompanied the expedition travelled by foot
throughout vast areas of Chile and Peru. They worked in the open countryside, making
observations of living plants growing in the wild.
