Franz Stephani's Species Hepaticarum, published in six volumes between 1898 and 1924, is of
great importance to all hepaticologists because it gives a monographic enumeration of all
liverworts known at the time.
Stephani also made a pencil drawing of each species he saw and described, clearly indicating
their distinctive character. The complete set of drawings, the Icones Hepaticarum, covers
more than 9,100 species.
